From 'Hiroshige' (Albuquerque, 1983)
There is a fifth set which was drawn between the "Great
" and the "Gyosho" Tokaidos, but which was
not published until 1919, the year it came to the attention of the Japanese publishing house of Sakai & Sons.
This rarity, designed in the 5th year of Tempo (1834-35), is of the Tokaido Yokyo Narita Dochu
(Intermediate Tokaido Stations and Views on the Narita Highway). The foreword in the brochure accompanying the 20-print
set written by J.S. Happer states:
This album of hitherto unpublished prints by the great Ukiyoe artist Hiroshige,
is absolutely unique in that it is a combination of ancient and modern art and technique.
It has recently come to the attention of the firm of Sakai that the noted collector, Mr. Takahata Kazuwo of Yokohama,
possessed some original drawings for the block made by Hiroshige which for some unknown
reason were never used and were in the original condition as prepared for the engraver connected
with the publisher Hoeido, or Takeuchi."
